First sight: Adam Sevani

The 18-year-old star of street-dance film Step Up 3D can act as well as dance

Who is he?

The dancing Michael Cera.

Come again?

Okay, not really. He's an 18-year-old Californian dancer with a bit of a Frodo haircut. He's in one of these street-dance films, Step Up 3D. He plays a skinny middle-class kid who promises his parents to hang up his dancing shoes and knuckle down to physics. Instead he falls in with a dance crew – they're underdogs in a big competition.

Aren't they always. You're not seriously telling me this is a good film?

Not at all. It's got cliches on its cliches. But we like this kid. And we're not the only ones. The New York Times said he "might be the baddest nerd in movie history" when he made an appearance in Step Up 2.

How come he's so nifty on his feet?

He's been at it since the age of three – his dad is a choreographer. He's a natural at acting, too. Performances can be pretty ropey in these films, since the leads are mostly professional dancers, but Sevani is funny and sincere.

We get it, you heart him. But what are his chances of getting into proper acting?

Actually, plenty of actors started out as dancers.

Like who?

Christopher Walken, Patrick Swayze and, erm, Gene Kelly. But he will need better lines than this one – "I dance because dance changes things" – to persuade anyone over 15 into a cinema.
