A male model who sent shockwaves through the fashion world after being pictured in women's clothes has come out as transgender.

Andrej Peji, 22, took the modelling world by storm with his extreme androgynous look which saw him wear both mens' and womenswear.

Now Andrej has announced she has had successful sex reassignment surgery to become a woman.

Posting a selfie on her Facebook page she thanked fans for their "love and support".

"You've all helped me through this journey and I have learned a lot and really come into my own and the response to today’s announcement truly overwhelmed me and reminds me of why I chose to do this publicly," said Andreja - who has now added an 'a' to her name.

"I think we all evolve as we get older and that's normal but I like to think that my recent transition hasn't made me into a different individual. Same person, no difference at all just a different sex  I hope you can all understand that.

"As a transgender woman I hope to show that after transition (a life-saving process) one can be happy and successful in their new chapter without having to alienate their past. Most importantly differences should not equal divisions, let's all stand together in union. #betruebeyou "

Andreja was scouted as a 17-year-old, reportedly when she was working in a McDonald's in Melbourne.

In 2012, she was chose by Dutch retail chain HEMA in its a lingerie campaign to promote a new ‘Mega Push-Up Bra’ .

The series of adverts shocked even the super liberal Netherlands although the reaction was overwhelming positive.

Andreja's good looks have made her one of the in-demand models of the moment.
