Classicism

Classicism developed as an art movement in the middle of the 18th century. In terms of content, the painting of this style is based on motifs from the times of antiquity and the Renaissance. The aim of the artists was to produce works that should reflect the beauty of nature with the help of a simple and harmonious formal aesthetics.

Here one tried to distinguish oneself from the preceding current of the Rokoko, which set above all on a sensual radiant emittance. Likewise, classicism stood in contrast to romanticism, which emerged at the beginning of the 19th century. The Romantics rejected the more representational representation of Classicism. In addition, from the middle of the 19th century, realism developed as an opposing direction, whose painters again primarily undertook a detailed depiction of reality and this, moreover, linked with socio-critical statements.

One of the most important painters of classicism is the Frenchman Jacques-Louis David, who lived between 1748 and 1825. Among his most famous works is the painting "The Oath of the Horatii" from 1874. The portrait with an ancient motif was commissioned by the French royal family and is now in the Louvre in Paris. Another important representative of painting in classicism was Jakob Philipp Hackert. The German painter lived from 1737 to 1807 and created mainly classicist landscape paintings such as the work "Landscape with Temple Ruins on Sicily", which can be admired today in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.
