Salmonella in cantaloupe sickens dozens in 32 states, including Texas

The recall includes cantaloupes and fruit dishes sold at Walmart and RaceTrac.

AUSTIN, Texas — Health officials are urging people not to eat certain cantaloupes and pre-cut food dishes as an outbreak of salmonella has spread to 32 states, including Texas.

Initially, at least 43 people across 15 states were infected, including 17 people who were hospitalized. The outbreak has now caused nearly 100 illnesses, and two deaths in Minnesota, as health officials continue to investigate.

In Texas, a voluntary recall has been issued for Freshness Guaranteed products sold at Walmart, which had a "Best By Date" between Nov. 7 and Nov. 12. The recall includes various items including seasonal blends, melon mixes and cantaloupe chunks. A fruit medley sold at RaceTrac gas stations is also on the recall notice.

CF Dallas, LLC, and Sofia Produce say all the recalled products have already expired, but those who froze the items to use later are urged to throw them out or get a refund immediately. You can view the full list of recalled items here.
