One of my favourite bands of the last five years or so Deerhunter (pictured) return with their first album since 2010's fine effort Halcyon Digest. The new one from the US art-rocking five piece is called Monomania and is due in early May. They recently shared the title track from the album – it can be heard at youtu.be/bYUENZQ84-E. Whereas Halcyon Digest was a relatively controlled, polished affair, here they sound a bit more unhinged and jagged, particularly in final movements as the song spins off into some wild noise. I'm pretty much happy to stick with them whatever move they make, so I'm excited to see how this record turns out.

Cat's soulful take on Manhattan

Cat Power has co-directed, with the help of music video/commercials maker Greg Hunt, a lovely video for her track “Manhattan”, from last year's excellent Sun LP. Just as the song itself is a gorgeous, melancholy but unsentimental ode to the island borough, so too the video is an irresistible tribute to the town. There's nothing particularly groundbreaking going in these visuals of Power essentially larking and travelling around but anyone with a soft spot for the city will be swept away. The singer also took the track to perform on Jimmy Fallon's chat show in the US. Showing a Dylan-like tendency to reinterpret her work, she paired her backing band with two members of The Roots (Fallon's house band) including master-drummer ?uestlove for a percussion heavy version of the song. First release from a music-making website

The excellent UK music website TheQuietus.com recently branched out into making music itself with its record label The Quietus Phonographic Corporation. Next week their first 12-inch release arrives in the shape of the debut EP by 22-year-old William Doyle, who goes by the name East India Youth. The four-track EP Hostel, full of moody art-pop with synth and krautrock flourishes, has been available since early March on iTunes at ind.pn/12COPAY and on boomkat at ind.pn/10PaHFx.
