Androgynous model Andreja Pejic, who previously went by Andrej, is pushing the boundaries of gender roles for models.

Pejic, known for posing in both male and female clothing on the runway and in campaigns, revealed to People on Thursday that she recently underwent gender reassignment surgery.
“I hope that by being open about this, it becomes less of an issue,” the 22-year-old told the magazine, adding that she had always dreamed of being a female ever since she was a child. “One of my earliest memories is spinning around in my mom’s skirt trying to look like a ballerina.”
Pejic — whose breakout moments included stepping out in the wedding dress at the end of Jean Paul Gaultier‘s spring 2011 couture show and appearing on the cover of Elle — also took to her Facebook page to thank fans for the support. “I think we all evolve as we get older and that’s normal but I like to think that my recent transition hasn’t made me into a different individual. Same person, no difference at all just a different sex I hope you can all understand that,” she wrote.

She concluded: “As a transgender woman I hope to show that after transition (a life-saving process) one can be happy and successful in their new chapter without having to alienate their past. Most importantly differences should not equal divisions, let’s all stand together in union.”
