Deerhunter is locked and loaded and ready to drop a new album.
The experimental rock outfit’s forthcoming set will be called Fading Frontier and it’ll arrive Oct. 16.
The Atlanta group announced the news overnight from its social media pages as a mysterious clock embedded in its Website completed its countdown. Also, the group’s label 4AD has shared the first song from the new effort, “Snakeskin,” a track it says showcases “a sinister flirtation with minimalist funk.”
Deerhunter Cancel U.K. & Europe Dates, ‘Family Circumstances’ To Blame
Deerhunter’s founding members Bradford Cox, Lockett Pundt, Moses Archuleta and Josh McKay all contribute to the album, which was penned in its hometown.
According to the indie 4AD, Deerhunter has musically “shifted towards something strikingly balanced, focused on melody and texture. The songs are brighter; if not in content, then in the album’s production. Starkness plays against clutter in what is the band’s most complex yet accessible work to date.” Fans are told to keep an ear out for the album track “Breaker,” on which Cox and Pundt share lead vocal duties, a first for the band.

Across the new, nine-track album, production duties were shared by the band members and Ben H. Allen III, continuing a partnership that started with 2010’s Halcyon Digest and continued with 2013’s Monomania, their sixth and most recent studio longplayer.

Deerhunter has just two live dates in the book — a performance Aug. 22 at FYF Fest in L.A. and on the opening day of the Oct. 29-31 Pitchfork Music Festival Paris. The outfit’s frontman, Cox, who was born with the genetic disorder Marfan syndrome, was hospitalized after he was hit by a car in late 2014.
