Located in central Milano, Parco Sempione is the city’s preeminent outdoor space. But beyond the acres of greenery, Simplon Park — as it is translated — contains a number of cultural landmarks. Originally conceived in the late 19th century, Parco Sempione was created to provide views of two of the city’s greatest monuments: Arco della Pace and Castello Sforzesco. To the northwest end of the park, Arco della Pace marks the gateway to Milano, representing peace. The arch itself deserves its own detailed entry, as it traces its origins back to the Roman Empire. At the other end of the park, Castello Sforzesco is a renovated 14th century castle. Like the arch, Milano’s largest castle requires a dedicated entry among city attractions. Today, it serves as a monument and art museum.

However, Parco Sempione offers many other landmarks and attractions. The greenery in the park is modeled after idealistic English parks, while a small pond accents the center of the area. Wide, pebbled paths which once allowed carriages to pass through now guide the foot traffic to a number of different points of interest. To the west, the Palazzo dell’arte — or, Palace of Art — is one Milano’s most notable art museums. Nearby, Branca Tower is a tall structure that provides stunning panoramas of the park and city. On the opposite side of the park, the northeastern corner is dominated by the Arena Civica, which is a multipurpose stadium hosting concerts and sporting events. Adjacent to this is the Acquario Civico di Milano, a century-old aquarium.

Getting to Parco Sempione is easy, through Milano’s various modes of transportation. Several metro lines, streetcar lines, and bus routes flank the park on all sides. Milano Cadorna is also a major rail station located a few blocks away from the southern entrances to the castle and park. While the park is geographically expansive, it is filled with cultural attractions for people of all interests. Be sure to plan ahead for any visits to the museums or aquarium in the park, as hours of operation and entry fees are important to take note of. For your visit, you can easily spend a day in the park with all of the things to do.

Good to Know

  • The Piazza Sempione is the formal entry-point of the park, where the Arco della Pace is located. However, you can enter and exit the park at a number of different points around the park.
  • In the middle of the park, the pond is accented by Ponte delle Sirenette, or the Bridge of the Mermaids. This area of the park features wildlife and is well worth a visit.
  • The Acquario Civico di Milano has free entry and features a number of sea creatures, along with a large statue of Neptune, the God of the Sea. Note that the aquarium is typically closed on Mondays.
  • For the best views, Branca Tower is accessible by stairs and elevator. The cost for entry and use of the elevator is nominal, and the structure remains open well into the evening hours.
  • The Castello Sforzesco, a cultural hub for the city, has a large courtyard which hosts Fashion Week events. Entry to the castle and museum come with fees, though they are reduced on some days.
  • Parco Sempione features wide thoroughfares, but be advised that many of the paths are not paved. You’re likely to find yourself on dusty and pebbly paths, so bring the appropriate footwear.
