The word “sacred” is synonymous with the concept of “divine/sky.” The word “geometry” comes from the Greek words “geos/earth” and “metron/ measure.” Together this translates as the “divine measuring of the earth” or “sky and earthly measurements.” Through the power of observation, humans used art and science as a way to create order. Sacred geometry is actually a set of mathematical formulas expressed as symbols. According to Joseph Campbell in his book The Way of the Power Animals, “When mankind began measuring the movements of the planets and the stars, this led to the realization that the cosmos was mathematically ordered. This shifted the focus from animal and plant messengers to the night sky and the ever dying and self-resurrecting moon and the sun.”  The moon and sun traveled in circular patterns that inspired humans to connect these great cycles with life itself. Their desire to understand this connection led to profound insights that formed the foundation and creation of time, calendar systems, astrology, astronomy, math and religious belief throughout the world. The ancient astronomers of Mesopotamia and Egypt followed by Greek philosophers and Judeo-Christian mythology laid the foundation for the development of the Western Mind, which influences our world today. Sacred geometry reminds us that humans created harmonic order by observing nature. They created a succession of visual symbols that are in fact a mathematical formula for life and the creation of time.
