The city of Lignano is divided into 3 different areas: Lignano Sabbiadoro, Lignano Pineta, and Lignano Riviera, each of which has certain characteristics.
The Sabbiadoro area, from which Lignano takes its name, is the best known and most popular. The beach has 17 information points (“uffici”) and it is here that the famous Pier (Terrazza a mare”) is located. The center has a lively pedestrian area especially in the evenings and full of stores, bars, and restaurants.
Lignano Pineta, famous since the 1960s thanks to the Tenda bar, is a somewhat greener and less crowded area that comes alive more in the evening hours thanks to the many bars open late. The beach has 7 information points (“uffici”) and there are several venues including the “Pagoda”, a bar on a pier surrounded by water.
Lignano Riviera is the quietest area of Lignano. The 6 offices start from the Thermal Park a and arrive at the mouth of the Tagliamento River. The establishments are less crowded and there is more space between umbrellas. Sea activities are the same as the others, but this shoreline is more suitable for those who want to enjoy peace and quiet. The built-up area is marked by many small villas amidst the greenery; for shopping and bars one must go to Pineta or Sabbiadoro.
The Terrace by the Sea is a water viewpoint created for tourism purposes in 1972. It is a long walkway ending in a platform with shell-shaped vaults. The circumference of the terrace is fully walkable, so it allows a 360-degree view of the sea and the beach. The facility houses a bar-restaurant and some stores.
Under the shell dome is a large bar-restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating around the perimeter of the platform. It is ideal for a drink and snack, lunch with a sea view, or a candlelight dinner.
The walk on the Terrace is very picturesque. From the beach you walk along the pier and arrive at the shopping area and then the risto-bar. Continuing past the restaurant is an additional scaffold that ends with a small lighthouse. The location is perfect for taking a photo: on a sunny day you can catch a glimpse of the islands of Sant’Andrea and Marinetta, which mark the border between the Adriatic Sea and the Marano Lagoon.
Lignano’s central avenue is a pedestrianized area located in Sabbiadoro. It is a long street stretching for more than 1 km, dotted with clothing and gift stores, restaurants and bars. In the evening it is very atmospheric to walk along the avenue, which is always bustling, together with family, friends or your pet.
The avenue and the entire downtown area are crowded with venues one next to the other. The vacation atmosphere is enriched by the variety of made-in-Italy culinary options, the numerous ice cream parlors and cocktail bars, a hangout for friends after a day at the beach.
Lignano Pineta was created in 1953 by the urban planning project of architect Marcello D’Olivo, who proposed structuring the streets to form a snail-like pattern around the center. Following this pattern, homes and green spaces have been built along a spiral creating a pleasant effect and peaceful atmosphere, which is constantly accompanied by the chirping of cicadas.
A walk on the “Train,” as the central street is called, an entrance to the Spa, a drink at the “Tent bar” or on the octagonal platform in the middle of the sea “The Pagoda.”
In a seaside resort like Lignano, one cannot fail to eat a tasty pasta allo scoglio or seafood in one of the many restaurants in or around the city center. Actually, the restaurants satisfy every palate because the cuisine is typical Italian and offers all kinds of dishes, whether meat, fish or vegetarian. There are also plenty of pizzerias in Lignano and, of course, artisanal ice cream parlors with every variety of flavors.
Water activities in Lignano are sure to energize: they range from windsurfing to kite surfing; from SUP, Electric SUP and Yoga SUP; from speedboat-drawn donuts to Parasailing. Not to be forgotten is a sea ride on classic Lignan pedal boats. Timeless.
In addition to relaxing under an umbrella, long walks on the shoreline, and countless beach bars, the beach offers many services for adults and children to enjoy days of fun. There are beach volleyball and beach tennis courts, outdoor gyms, free entertainment with dancing, kids club, pilates, water aerobics and many other activities. There are baby areas and pet-friendly areas. There are many beach bars for a snack or appetizer, including the Sea Terrace and Pagoda, and post-dinner events with music and DJ sets.
Whether you are in Pineta or Sabbiadoro, Lignano is full of stores for shopping of all kinds, restaurants, and bars for an aperitif, a tasting, or an after-dinner drink. The two localities are connected by a bus line and a bicycle path that passes through the greenery. You can rent electric scooters, move around on foot or on rollerblades. There is a spa, golf club, and tennis club. In the evening, a stroll along the lively and bustling Corso, including street performers and arcades, is a must. Just outside the center are organized shows, entertainment, cabaret, and the outdoor opera house. After 11 p.m. you can have fun in nighttime lignano with clubbing and discos.
Lignano is home to Aquasplash, a water park renowned throughout Italy, the large Punta Verde Zoo Park, and “Strabilia,” a Luna Park open every evening throughout the summer season. For an unforgettable day you can take boat trips to “The Island of Shells,” among the casoni in the Marano and Grado lagoons, to the mouths of the Stella River, or to Aquileia. Daily bicycle/e-bike tours are organized to explore the river and lagoon environments and three times a week sand-bike rides in the morning when the beach is still resting. For enthusiasts, there is a go-kart track not far from Lignano.
In Lignano leisure and comfort are an inseparable combination. Each beach establishment houses a bar and provides rental of sunbeds and umbrellas or gazebos. Umbrellas can also be reserved online. A variety of water sports can be enjoyed at the beach thanks to the various retailers located along the shoreline. There are also several beaches dedicated to dogs.
Lignano is inhabited year-round and holds events in winter as well, such as the Christmas market, but it is a purely summer resort and most businesses are closed in the cold months. The summer season starts on April 30, when the beach service opens, and ends in late September.
Events in Lignano are many and new ones are added every year. Among those not to be missed are the “Festa delle Cape” and “Lignano in Fiore” in spring, the “Frecce Tricolori” show, the “Biker Fest,” the “Fireworks and Burning of the Sea” on Aug. 15 and 16, and the “Natale d’A…Mare” between December and January. In addition, every year the most famous Italian and international artists perform in concert at Teghil Stadium or Alpe Adria Arena.
The town hosts several campsites, more or less close to the sea, complete with all services.

Charging: parking lots along the beach and those near the center of Sabbiadoro and Pineta are chargeable during the opening period of the maritime season, at a cost of 0.90 cents per hour.
