The renaissance of blue and white interior style I wrote about in March 2022 is now growing apace on both sides of the Atlantic. It is like alchemy takes place whenever these two colours connect as together they spark something excitingly fresh and hopeful. And, in an uncertain world, maybe this intoxicating chemistry is another reason why decorating with blue and white is once again proving to be so inspiring.

This revival also reconnects the pattern links that exist between ceramics with fabrics and wallcoverings. The decorative plate, whether an antique Willow pattern or the work of one of the UK’s great contemporary ceramicists, is back as wall art. Whilst dressers are once again heaving with comforting mismatched china, interiors are being artfully orchestrated in symphonies of blue and white.

As a colour club of two, blue and white can be a little uncompromising in nature (which I love) but of course it does depend on how you use it. It works well as a basis for red, blue and white schemes, also partnering harmoniously with citrus shades, blush pinks, browns and many greens. For a softer, gentler interior style seek cyanotype, block print and resist dyed designs or for a crisper more tailored effect look to historical prints, passementerie and valanced upholstery.
